**Please note that the order of readings has been revised.
If you are planning to take the course for credit, try to get hold of the following books as soon as possible. (The instructor will not order books for the class.) You may need to purchase some of them from an international book supplier, but international shipping is getting seriously delayed due to the pandemic.
We will be reading five novels for the semester. The fifth is to be decided later, but these four are in the syllabus for sure, in the order in which they will be read in the semester:
1) Ishiguro, Kazuo. Never Let Me Go. New York: Vintage International, 2005.
2) Sebald, W. G. Austerlitz. Trans. Anthea Bell. London: Penguin, 2011. (German original 2001)
3) O’Neill, Joseph. Netherland. New York: Pantheon, 2008.
4) McCarthy, Tom. Remainder. New York: Vintage, 2007.
Note 1: A different edition or a digital version is fine.

課程目標 |
This course looks at noteworthy formal, thematic, and epistemological shifts in the novel in the new century. While this temporal demarcation may seem contrived, given the rather brief time period bracketed, this periodization is intended to urge us to identify new ways of discussing the body of work produced in response to our time. The course is aimed at a comparative scope, though most writings selected may be from the English-speaking world.
For this semester, we will be focusing on the stakes of the novel within these contexts in particular: the “post-post era” and the return of realism; neoliberalism and the pervasiveness of the lure of immediacy; the dominance of “world literature.” We will examine the politics and ethics of the novelistic form in light of classic issues such as representation. We will also attend to new possibilities: not only new creative sensibilities but also refreshing critical and theoretical terms, the latter including ways to configure the nonhuman or the impersonal voice in the novelistic architecture.
Topics to be addressed include the following:

--The Ethics of the Impersonal: The Limits of Representation
--The Novel as an Epistemology
--The Contemporary Novel and the Neoliberal Logic
--The Impossibility of World Literature |

課程要求 |
1. Preparation, attendance, and class participation.
2. Two sessions of “discussion facilitation.” Sign up for two sessions of discussion facilitation and prepare discussion questions on the reading materials of the week. Length requirement for each question sheet: 250-400 words.
3. Two “think-pieces.” Write reflections, each 200 words minimum, on two of the novels we read. They should be responses to the questions touched upon in class.
4. Term paper. Word count (not including bibliography): 3,000 words minimum for M.A. students; 5,000 words minimum for Ph.D. students. An abstract of 250-400 words is due in Week 16.
5. Attendance at talks given by invited guests. |
